Delivers critical and non-critical patient care services to all age groups using selected invasive and noninvasive techniques related to the cardiopulmonary system. Provides respiratory care predominately in critical care areas. Responsible for other duties as assigned.
Responsibilities
Patient Population & Clinical CareProvide age-appropriate respiratory care to neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient populations. Utilize knowledge of growth and developmental stages to assess, treat, and educate patients effectively. Communicate clearly with patients and families regarding treatment plans, procedures, and ongoing care. Collaborate with patients, families, guardians, physicians, and interdisciplinary team members to ensure optimal outcomes. Recognize and address physical, psychological, cultural, religious, and behavioral health needs that may impact patient care. Identify and appropriately respond to signs and symptoms of abuse, neglect, or patient safety concerns. Safely administer treatments, medications, and respiratory care interventions in accordance with established clinical standards.
Direct Patient CareAssess patient conditions, monitor responses to therapy, and modify care plans based on clinical outcomes and physician orders. Provide both invasive and non-invasive respiratory therapies while maintaining compliance with departmental policies and National Patient Safety Goals. Manage and troubleshoot respiratory equipment, ensuring proper setup, maintenance, and availability of supplies. Participate in interdisciplinary rounds and collaborate with physicians and healthcare teams to deliver evidence-based patient care. Maintain adherence to infection prevention protocols, including Standard Precautions.
Respiratory Services ProvidedClinical respiratory assessments, Mechanical ventilation management, BiPAP and CPAP therapy, Internal and external ventilator transport, Hemodynamic monitoring, Arterial blood gas (ABG) sampling and analysis, Assistance with intubation, bronchoscopy, and bedside tracheostomy procedures, Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL/PAL) collection, Point-of-care testing and diagnostics, Emergency airway management and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, Medical gas administration, Aerosolized medication therapies, Incentive spirometry and pulmonary rehabilitation techniques, Airway clearance therapies, including: PEP Therapy, Percussion and Postural Drainage, High-Frequency Chest Wall Oscillation, In-Exsufflator Therapy, Interpulmonary Percussive Ventilation, Oximetry, transcutaneous monitoring, and end-tidal CO? monitoring, Pulmonary function testing, Sputum specimen collection, Passy-Muir speaking valve support, Neonatal room air challenges, Surfactant administration, Electrocardiogram (EKG) performance.
Documentation & CommunicationAccurately document assessments, treatments, interventions, and patient responses within the electronic medical record (EMR). Maintain complete, timely, and compliant clinical documentation and charge capture. Utilize SBAR and other approved communication methods to ensure effective care transitions and handoffs. Communicate patient status changes and care needs to physicians, nurses, and other healthcare team members.
Patient & Family EducationEducate patients and families on respiratory conditions, treatment plans, wellness strategies, home-care modalities, and safety practices. Provide educational resources that support patient understanding and treatment adherence. Serve as a preceptor and mentor to students, new hires, and clinical staff as needed.
Leadership & Professional PracticeServe as a clinical resource to physicians, nurses, and interdisciplinary team members regarding cardiopulmonary care. Support departmental goals, quality initiatives, and organizational leadership strategies. Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and strong problem-solving skills. Participate in committees, shared governance, quality improvement activities, and professional development opportunities. Contribute to a positive work environment through collaboration, teamwork, and effective communication. Utilize downtime productively to support departmental operations, education, and patient care initiatives.
Qualifications
- Minimum Required: Associate degree, Graduate of a two-to-four-year AMA approved Respiratory Therapy program. Preferred: Bachelor's Degree.
- Current State of Ohio License. RRT credential issued by the National Board of Respiratory Care within 9 months of graduation or hire date.
- Current BLS (with ACLS, PALS or NALS for respective work area).
- Minimum Required: 1 - 2 Years equivalent experience.
